FAQ

How do I?...

👉 Become a concept artist?

To become an artist in the game industry, start by identifying the specific role you want, such as a character concept artist, and research where you'd like to work. Analyze the portfolios of professionals in that role and compare your work to theirs. Take notes on their page formatting, portfolio content, stylization, and the quality of their sketches and final product. Use this information to create a game plan for producing unique portfolio pieces that reflect the core strengths of the work you admire. Focus on building a strong, cohesive portfolio that prioritizes quality over quantity. Networking is also key—connect with professionals and other artists to stay on their radar when positions open up. Finally, carry yourself and your artwork with confidence, as your energy can leave a lasting impression!

👉 Get better at art?

To get better at art, start by mastering the fundamentals—these are the building blocks of all great artwork. Spend at least a year deeply absorbing and practicing the basics, such as anatomy, perspective, color theory, and composition. Find joy in this process, because strong fundamentals are essential; no matter how creative your ideas or advanced your painting skills, lacking in the basics can hold you back from being hired. People that I studied a lot of my foundational work from: - George Bridgman - James Gurney - Michael Hampton - James Douglas - Ahmed Aldoori - Kienan Lafferty - Trent Kaniuga Additionally, study the work of artists who have the job you aspire to. Analyze what makes their art appealing and why their techniques work. By understanding and incorporating these elements into your own practice, you can gradually elevate your skills and move closer to achieving your artistic goals. Some of the artists that I analyzed while a student: - Tyler Edlin - Anh Dang - Jeremy Anninos - Adam Duff - John J. Park - Michael Maurino - Vincenzo Barkasy NOTE: Don't associate being a good artist with the tools you use. You can become a professional with a $20 tablet and the basic Photoshop brush pack.

👉 Stay motivated?

This is what changed my mindset! You’re the Result of Yourself by Pablo Neruda Don’t blame anyone, never complain of anyone or anything Because basically you have made of your life what you wanted. Accept the difficulties of edifying yourself And the worth of starting to correct your character. The triumph of the true man arises from the ashes of his mistakes. Never complain of your loneliness or your luck. Face it with courage and accept it. Somehow, they are the result of your acts and It shows that you’ll always win. Don’t feel frustrated of your own failures, neither unload them to someone else. Accept yourself now or you’ll go on justifying yourself like a child. Remember that any time is good to start And that no time is so good to give up. Don’t forget that the cause of your present is your past, As the cause of your future will be your present. Learn from the brave, from the strong, From who doesn’t accept situations From who will live in spite of everything. Think less of your problems and more of your work. Learn to arise from your pain, And to be greater than the greatest of your obstacles. Look at the mirror of yourself and you’ll be free and strong And you’ll stop being a puppet of circumstances. For you yourself are your destiny. Wake up and stare at the sun in the mornings and breathe the sun of dawn. You’re part of the strength of your life now, Rise up, fight, walk, be sure and you’ll win in life. Don’t ever think of ‘fate’ For fate is the excuse of failures.

👉 Know if art school is right for me?

While you can learn everything you need from home through free resources like YouTube, self-study, and online classes, art school provides a structured environment where all the essential information is delivered systematically, ensuring you don’t skip or slack on important topics. Art school also allows you to explore various facets of art, helping you discover what type of artist you want to become. It makes you competent in multiple areas, but it won’t necessarily make you exceptional enough to land a job; you'll need to further develop one area to an industry standard on your own. Your decision should also consider your personality—if you’re structured, motivated, and consistent, you might do well with self-study. However, if you struggle with motivation or need external structure, art school could be beneficial. Finally, money is a significant factor; art school can be expensive, so weigh the cost against your learning style and career goals. For me, art school was the right choice. I feel well rounded in all facets of art, including 3D, which has given me a leg up when interviewing for jobs.
